To me, Everest was never just a mountain but a life ambition that was achieved through years of hard work and perseverance. We all have our own Everest to climb and we need to understand that this involves as much dreaming and gazing into the night’s sky as knowing that the road will almost always be long and hard. All I knew about mountains back then was that Everest is the highest so I wanted to climb it. Further research made me realise that climbing Everest is almost an insurmountable goal and would take countless years to fulfil. Rather than give up, I held the vision and began breaking down that one large dream into smaller more achievable ones. For twelve years I gained strength and skill, climbing progressively more difficult mountains until on the 17th of May 2007 at precisely 9:49AM my dream finally came true and I became the first Egyptian and youngest Arab to stand on the top of Mount Everest. |
